SMMTurges government to boost consumer spending
12 Nov 2008As the impact of falling car sales continues to spread, SMMTis repeating its call for immediate government action to boost consumer confidence and kick start the market.
‘We’d like to see a full package of support for the sector to boost consumer confidence and encourage buyers back into showrooms’, said SMMTchief executive Paul Everitt. ‘Last week’s cut in interest rates is a positive start but we need to ensure the cut is passed on to consumers and small businesses, quickly and in full to maximise it’s impact.’
‘We’d like to see government maintain public expenditure on new vehicles and investigate schemes to incentivise cleaner, lower-emitting vehicles, including scrapping the planned changes to VED. It’s vital that government send out the right signal at this time.’
SMMTwill continue to lobby government ahead of the pre-budget report, expected later this month.
