John G Russell and Scania to test hydrogen HGVs
8 Oct 2026

Scottish haulier John G Russell (Transport) will become the first operator to put hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEV) into its daily operations on UK roads, in collaboration with Scania.
The announcement follows the handover of three prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks to the operator at Scania’s Eurocentral site in Scotland.
They form part of the ZENFreight project, one of the Government-backed Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme initiatives, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK.
The three trucks use Scania鈥檚 latest 6脳2*4 battery electric truck platform, and each vehicle features a 400 kW electric machine and 416 kWh of installed battery capacity.
Scania estimates an electric-only range of up to 300 km at a gross vehicle weight of 44 tonnes. A 300 kW Cummins fuel-cell engine sits beneath the cab.
Developed by Scania’s Pilot Partner division, the trucks are among a small fleet of prototype fuel cell vehicles being tested across Europe in different operational environments.
The trial will provide valuable insight into how hydrogen fuel cell technology performs in real-world logistics operations, helping to assess its potential role alongside battery electric vehicles in the transition to net zero freight.
Stephen Madden, Group Fleet Engineer at John G Russell, said: 鈥淭his is an exciting opportunity to build confidence in zero-emission freight.
鈥淏y operating three of Scania’s prototype FCEVs in the UK, we are proud to be at the forefront of a pioneering initiative that will help accelerate the transition to cleaner, greener logistics.鈥
